This course provides an introduction and foundational framework to the applied practice of Child Life Studies, through its history, philosophy and scope. Students will explore psychosocial and developmental theories with a focus on  on supporting children and families in healthcare and related settings. Additionally, students will be introduced to methods of practice, models of coping support; therapeutic play; family-centered care; and the interdisciplinary approach to practice. Emphasis is placed on understanding the 
child’s perspective of illness, hospitalization, grief and bereavement, as well as the role of Child Life Specialists in advocacy and emotional support for families and within their community context.
